Firsts

Day: 8 Distance: 20 miles start: 9:30am stop: 8:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: about 300 feet above sycamore creek after one steep climb It’s official Silver City is the nicest trail town I have ever been to.  I think four different people stopped on the way out of town to talk with us.  At the campground where the trailhead meets the road,  the camp host took me back a quarter mile in his gator to get water for all of us.   We had gone too far thinking it would be at the trailhead. Firsts Running creek, …

Would you mind taking a picture of me on the toilet?

Day: 7 Distance: 18 miles start: 5:00am stop: 2:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Silver City; the Murray Hotel Quote of the day: “Would you mind taking a picture of me on the toilet?” The 5am start was a little painful but we’ll worth it to avoid the heat.   We took Deadman Canyon to Tyrone Road, and them highway 90 to Silver City.  The hike up Deadman’s canyon was very  enjoyable.  There was a little route finding;  especially since we started in the dark and walked passed or turn.  In the early morning the canyon was cool …

Mud Spring, Yeah!

Day: 6 Distance: 19 miles start: 7:00am stop: 6:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Mud Spring; cowboy camping We got a decently early start this morning but seemed to move slowly.   Maybe everyone was still dragging from the heat yesterday.  We took frequent breaks which made for an enjoyable hike. Our first water source wasn't much to look at, but it tasted fine and was a life saver over the next few hours as the heat set in. Again,  it was a hot day.  In the upper 90's for sure.  Given that I'm a little out of …

It’s the little things

Day: 5 Distance: 18 miles start: 9:30am stop: 6:30 pm Elevation: 6180 ft Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Coop windmill ; cowboy camping Lowlight: the walk across the plain north of Lordsburg was brutal.  We didn't get started until 9:30, and those 12 miles put a beat down on me. Highlight: sitting completely exposed to the sun next to a cattle trough surrounded by cow poo drinking the water we got from the tank next to the trough. It is amazing what a little water will do to boost morale after a long hot walk in the sun.  Soon …

Into Lordsburg

Date: 5/10/2016 Day: 4 Distance: 25 miles start: 7:00am stop: 6:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock, Carpenter, Creaper, Radar, Peru Camp: Econo Lodge Highlight: Sitting in the shade of the last water cache box (the only shade) and resting for the final push to lordsburg. We left fairly early after no further run in with the stampeding horses. Some I'm writing this a day later I'm having trouble remembering the day.   I came within 2 feet of stepping on a rattlesnake; that was fun.  We saw more horned lizards, drank from the first cattle trough of the hike …

Guthook saves the day

Distance: 24 miles start: 8;00am stop: 7:30 pm Elevation: 4330 Others Here: Cloudbuster Camp: 3 miles from highway 9; cowboy camping Highlight: Detour to explore Old Hachita We started out taking an alternate route to see a mining ghost town called Old Hachita.  I regretted skipping this alternate on my last hike so was happy to make up for it this time. Today started out cool and breezy but ended a bit warm.  We stopped at mile 20 which happened to be a water cache around 5 to rest in the shade of the cache box and have dinner, then …

Day 2

Distance: 24 miles start: 7:30 am stop: 7:00 pm Elevation: 4750 Others Here: Cloudbuster Highlight: We saw two coyotes.  Also enjoyed being serenaded by a pack in the middle of the night. Today was a long but rewarding day.  My body isn’t quite used to 24 mile days yet and I’m tired.   It was relatively cool and cloudy most of the day.  The sun only cane out in all its glory a few times to remind us to be thankful for the clouds. We lost Snake Bite”s company today because her feet were blistering and she needed to slow down. …

Illegals?

Day 1 Distance: 14 miles Elevation: 4330 Start Location: Mexican Border End Location: First water cache Hours Hiked: 7 Others Here: Cloudbuster, Snake Bite Cloudbuster and I were joined by Snake Bite for the shuttle ride this morning.   She is a perky young lady from Perth and pleasant company.  After a 3 plus hour shuttle ride down crazily bumpy, washed out dirt roads we made it to the border.   Not before we picked up a couple at the first water cache who had endured enough and wanted out. We took the obligatory border start pictures and learned that there must …
