Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported me and followed my progress on this journey.  It means the world to me.   Yesterday, I decided to go ahead and suspend my hike at Berthoud Pass.  Since I had just about the most perfect day possible, I reasoned that would be the best way to finish for this year.

I am sorry to disappoint, but as I have already mentioned, the draw of family has become stronger than the desire to finish in a calendar year.  With the 2 week delay, I am not sure it would have been possible anyway.  I have no regrets about going back to Oklahoma to see my precious uncle Dale.  Family is more important, and I would make the same decision again.

Things didn't pan out during the hike as I had planned, but I'm OK with that. Are there things that I would change if I could go back?  Sure there are.  We don't get to change the past, we get to move on from today where "a man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps." (Proverbs 16:9)

I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to come this far.  It is a privilege that I do not take lightly.  I am thankful to my wonderful employers for allowing me to skip town for so long and to the people at work who took up the slack for me.  Ackkkk; I don't want to think about work … I was given a ride down from the pass by a marine and his family.  It is because of his sacrifice and the sacrifices of others like him that bums like me have the freedom to hike across this great country of ours.   Yes, I am grateful!

I plan to pick up where I left off and hope to finish the trail over a 2 or 3 year period.

  1. Thank you Kathy. I am also sad that I won’t get to see you and your parents this time around. Next time for sure. Give everyone my love.

  2. Jim, I am so proud and happy for you for this incredible experience and the decision to follow your heart rather than the trail. I know it was a difficult choice; however, I firmly believe your prayers were heard and you listened. I have so thoroughly enjoyed this journey with you. Jerry and I thought of you often – even more while hiking in the Adirondacks last week…especially seeing AT hikers in Maine and on Mount Washington, NH 🙂

  3. It has been wonderful to follow your journey. I’m only sad that we won’t have a chance to visit 🙂 Next time… All the best. Kathy
