Got going nice and early this morning with thoughts of restaurant food in our heads. JK contacted me last night via my Delorme Inreach to say that he would be able to meet us at the pass. Of course there was plenty of snow between us and the pass. As we approached the Wolf Creek sky area on the northern slope through the trees we assessed or options. Traverse the side of the mountain through a snow covered mountainside of pickup sticks or … follow the snow covered fire road up to the same point on the ridge. We chose the road which took us right up to the ridge top and the first of 3 sky lifts. We then followed the snow covered ridge down to one of the sky slopes which took us almost to the highway.
John hadn’t arrived yet but Ron was at the pass eating Pringles and all the other foods random motorists had given him. JK pulled up about 30 minutes later with 4 hikers in the car; Earlybird, Squirrel, Footprint, and Lola. Stumbling Beef, Two Roll (Wes), and Turbo also arrived at the same time. This is the most hikers I’ve seen in one place since the hike began. Actually, it is the most ice ever seen on the CDT. Last time I estimated that I saw 10 northbound hikers the entire hike.
JK took us back down and proceeded to do one of the many things he does best. He spoiled us by driving us to take care of all our town chores. Honestly, I don’t think there are many people who would go this far out of their way to serve the way JK does. I am blessed to have such a friend.
It has been a great day.
