Well, I ended up staying an extra night.  I couldn't say no and believe the rest will do me good. My stay here has been fantastic. Rod and Junelle are such wonderful people.  No wonder they have generations of families returning to the ranch for 20+ years. I surely did need the rest and am so happy I stayed another …

Waunita Hot Springs

Date: 6/25/2016 Day: 50 Distance: 22 miles start: 6:15 am stop: 3:15 pm Elevation: 9052 ft Others Here: No other hikers Camp: Staying with the Pringles Beautiful hike between Marshall and Monarch Pass today.   I am thankful that there was no afternoon thunderstorm. I had only planned to stay one night but Mrs Pringle assumed I would be staying two nights.  How could I turn down this hospitality from such a sweet older lady.  The rest should be good for me, and home cooked meals won’t hurt either.  I plan to go with them to church tomorrow. I only hope …

just walking

Date: 6/24/2016 Day: 49 Distance: 27 miles start: 7:00 am stop: 7:30 pm Elevation: 10560 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster Camp: Tenting Not much notable today.  I don’t think I even took any pictures.  Mostly all on the ridge with tree cover.  Had the normal afternoon thunderstorm and then it stayed gray all day. The tree cover was especially nice during the rain. Trying to get up early tomorrow so must sleep.

How green was my valley

Date: 6/23/2016 Day: 48 Distance: 29 miles start: 7:00 am stop: 8:00 pm Elevation: 10240 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster Camp: Tenting Slept in this morning because it was raining. Nice easy hike in the valley. It was a nice change and I really enjoyed the green valley.  Lots of beaver ponds in the beginning followed by a meandering creek. Afternoon thunderstorm brought cold rain. We took shelter for 10 minutes under some pine trees.  Later we passed through areas that had received inches of hail. So much that the ground was completely white. There doesn’t seem to be much …

Get your head in the game boy

Date: 6/22/2016 Day: 47 Distance: 22 miles start: 8:00 am stop: 7:15 pm Elevation: 11266 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster Camp: Along Cochetopa Creek; Tenting We were able to get a 7am ride up to the pass thanks to the very friendly owner of the High Country Market.  I think if I had the opportunity to live in Colorado, I would choose Lake City.  Anyway,  we got started by 8am and I have to confess that my head was not in a good place.   You see, I spoke with two little girls on the phone last night and as a …

I’m sending my snowshoes and microspikes home.  That’s 4.5 pounds less on my pack.

Lake City

Date: 6/20/2016 Day: 45 Distance: 23 miles start: 6:20 am stop: 4:20 pm Elevation: 8900 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster, Ron, Tank Camp: Raven's Rest Hostel I weighed myself at the hostel and have lost 10 pounds.  I plan to take zero day to try and build back up a little. Lake city is a great place and in my opinion this is the best hostel on the trail.  Actually the hostel owner, Lucky, is the main reason it is my favorite.  He is exceptional.

Get back on that horse

Date: 6/19/2016 Day: 44 Distance: 22 miles start: 6:40 am stop: 7:30 pm Elevation: 12226 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster, Polar Bear, Tank Camp: small lake near Cataract Lake ; tenting I had been talking up the alternate over Hunchback peak but when it came to it, I was feeling very unsure of myself after yesterday’s fall and self arrest.  I told Cloudbuster I was going to take the official and lower CDT route.  But I could tell he really wanted to do hunchback  (which is a 13135 ft peak) but he was willing to go low with me.   He …

You must Whippet

Date: 6/18/2016 Day: 43 Distance: 19 miles start: 7:00 am stop: 7:30 pm Elevation: 12361 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster Camp: ; tenting Remember that song by Devo? “… You must whip it…”  Well it came into my mind today. My socks and shoes were frozen this morning and it took me 10 minutes to get the shoes on. Only about 7 miles into the day we reached The Window and my legs were already feeling like jello; these San Juans are eating me up.   In spite of my condition, I gave into peer pressure and agreed to hike up …

Knife Edge and Beyond

Date: 6/17/2016 Day: 42 Distance: 19.5 miles start: 7:00 am stop: 8:00 pm Elevation: 11505 ft Others Here: Linus Cloudbuster, Ron Camp: North Fork Los Pinos River; tenting We had hoped to make it past Knife Edge yesterday, but it just wasn't meant to be. This morning we did not even want to attempt the cirque after knife edge early in the morning when the snow was likely to be frozen.   My socks and shoes certainly were.  Four years ago rather than traversing that cirque we went down low into the bowl below then back up. This time we decided …
