Date: 5/18/2016 Day: 12 Distance: 11 miles start: 7:30 am stop: 1:00 pm Elevation: 7706 ft Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Snow Lake; Umm making good use of the facilities I have always considered myself to have at least a modicum of pride, self respect, general decency, and propriety.   Well I suppose even the best of us can fall from his pedestal after a couple days of being cold and wet only to see dark menacing clouds directly over the pass for which he is bound. That's right we decided to camp out in two of the privies at …

Hard day on the Gila

Date: 5/17/2016 Day: 11 Distance: 18 miles start: 7:00 am stop: 5:15 pm Elevation: 6680 Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: 11 ish miles from Snow Lake; tenting The grandeur of the canyon walls continued to keep us enraptured for most of the morning.  Then the difficult nature of this section crowded out the beauty and all three of us began to struggle.   I couldn't understand why I didn't remember this section begin so difficult until the flood of a few years ago came to mind.  The Gila flooded and most of the trail was destroyed.   Jordan hot spring is …

Cathedral not made by human hands

Date: 5/16/2016 Day: 10 Distance: 15 miles start: 6:45am stop: 7:00 pm Elevation: 5800 Others Here:  Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Where little bear canyon meets the Gila; cowboy camping We hung out at Doc Campbell’s Post for several hours just relaxing.  Well, I’m a little ashamed to say that the WiFi was also a big incentive.   The vortex of technology is a powerful force. Once we wrenched ourselves away from social media, email, and all those things that make me want to be out here in the first place, we headed for Little Bear Canyon.  An alternative within the Gila …

Gila

Day: 8 Distance: 20 miles start: 7:30 am stop: 7:30 pm Elevation: 4230 Others Here: Tick Tock Camp: Somewhere beside the Gila River about 6 miles from Doc Campbell’s. Tenting. Once again, I’m pretty beat.  We finished up the hike in the trees about mid day and descended rapidly into Sapillo Creek, which feeds into the Gila.  I’m too tired to get out my maps but I think we were in the Pinos Altos mountains.  It felt so refreshing to be in the forest after the days in the high desert.  Made me remember how thankful I am to be …

Firsts

Day: 8 Distance: 20 miles start: 9:30am stop: 8:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: about 300 feet above sycamore creek after one steep climb It’s official Silver City is the nicest trail town I have ever been to.  I think four different people stopped on the way out of town to talk with us.  At the campground where the trailhead meets the road,  the camp host took me back a quarter mile in his gator to get water for all of us.   We had gone too far thinking it would be at the trailhead. Firsts Running creek, …

Would you mind taking a picture of me on the toilet?

Day: 7 Distance: 18 miles start: 5:00am stop: 2:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Silver City; the Murray Hotel Quote of the day: “Would you mind taking a picture of me on the toilet?” The 5am start was a little painful but we’ll worth it to avoid the heat.   We took Deadman Canyon to Tyrone Road, and them highway 90 to Silver City.  The hike up Deadman’s canyon was very  enjoyable.  There was a little route finding;  especially since we started in the dark and walked passed or turn.  In the early morning the canyon was cool …

Mud Spring, Yeah!

Day: 6 Distance: 19 miles start: 7:00am stop: 6:00 pm Elevation: Others Here: Cloudbuster, Tick Tock Camp: Mud Spring; cowboy camping We got a decently early start this morning but seemed to move slowly.   Maybe everyone was still dragging from the heat yesterday.  We took frequent breaks which made for an enjoyable hike. Our first water source wasn't much to look at, but it tasted fine and was a life saver over the next few hours as the heat set in. Again,  it was a hot day.  In the upper 90's for sure.  Given that I'm a little out of …
